The Project

AlCampetto is a photographic atlas of basketball courts. The images of this collection are geolocated and enriched with other metadata. They document the condition of the municipal courts in Milan.

Before opening a pull request, please open an issue first to discuss your idea and get feedback from the maintainer.

Qualitative notes are an integral part of the dataset: a brief comment on the overall condition of the facility, always using neutral language. Even a neglected court remains a resource for the neighbourhood.

Photography Protocol

Each court is documented with 4 standard shots, taken following shared positions and criteria to ensure consistency and comparability across the courts in the dataset.

From the least obstructed corner, at eye level. Full court in frame, landscape orientation.

From the free-throw line, central axis of the paint, facing the basket. Frame: hoop, backboard and part of the paint.

Surface
At centre court, standing upright. Camera pointing straight down. Frame: centre circle and half-court line.
Nadir — no angle
Time of day · Morning, preferably early. Later morning accepted with adequate light.
Court · Empty, no people in frame.
Light · Natural, soft. Clear or overcast sky both acceptable. Avoid harsh midday direct light.
Equipment · DSLR or mirrorless (RAW preferred). Smartphone accepted as a secondary option.
The Dataset

Different licenses target different project components. The dataset is distributed under CC BY 4.0, in JSON format and with reference to the Milan area.

The data collected for each court is deliberately minimal. There are lots of courts in and around Milan, and the time available for the survey is limited. I designed a collection process that could be completed in less than three minutes.

Father of two teenage hoopers, being into basketball since they were six. I usually take pics of their games.
